I’m Stuart Fox, a UK TV and documentary composer, multi-instrumentalist and gadget enthusiast, working from my studio in Gloucestershire. I’ve been working on film and TV for a while, with my first BBC drama airing in 2003. My music has featured in a wide variety of TV, including true crime, game shows, and factual TV, but the bulk of my composing to picture has been for documentary TV and Film.
I love talking about music, as most who know me will know, I love the collaborative process and I believe that music, picture, sound and story work best when all of the components are created to work together as a whole. Even now, I still get a rush out of seeing a story come to life and knowing I’ve contributed a little in making that happen.
Documentary and TV scores
I’ve written original scores for National Geographic, History, S4C and ITV Wales. They include the six-part series Islands (National Geographic, S4C and France 5), Deserts and Life, narrated by Mark Strong, Saving Egypt’s Oldest Pyramid, Megastructures: London’s Olympic Stadium, episodes 7 to 10 of America: The Story of Us for History, and Festivals (Gwyliau) for S4C.
I also love working on short films and independent documentaries, including Angela Clarke’s Bachelor, 38 and Can’t Get You Out of My Head, and Emily Sargent’s Outspoken: Jackie Forster.
Production music
I also write library music and it’s always fun when it randomally pops up on TV. They’ve been heard in The Family Brain Games on the BBC, The Curious Case of Natalia Grace on Discovery, Models, Misfits and Mayhem on ITV2, Our School on CBBC, Inside the Factory and plenty more. See where my music has been used.
What I do when I’m not in the studio…
You mean there’s life outside of the studio??
Basically my life is split between work and doing fun things with my little one. I’ve started to compile a list of places around Gloucestershire to take kids. Check it out here: Kids Days Out.
I do love to sit at the piano, I’ll usually slip into a mix of jazz, show tunes and Disney. I have volunteered doing the occasional stint playing piano at a local hospital, the Disney always goes down well.
You can Hear me play jazz and musical theatre here. I also tinker in the Boffins’ Lab, building Raspberry Pi arcade machines and the odd Game Boy conversion. I used to help out at the Cotswold Raspberry Pi Jam which offered a place to show off pi projects and builds, and coding / making tutorials for kids. Sadly the Cotswold Raspberry Pi Jam is no longer running since we lost our brilliant venue (and covid changed everything).
